I really enjoyed the story in this book. Good twists and turns to it with just enough spice to mix up your traditional western theme. Jimmy was a good, strong character who was reliable and slightly mysterious at the same time. Adelaide was feisty but sweet. There wasn't too much concentration on them falling in love, but they did respond well together. There were a lot of side characters, but they were all nicely "default" characters so you didn't get too confused (aka, you knew they were good or bad and that was most of their purpose). I would have liked it to be a little more flushed out though with greater detail and smoother flow. I felt like it could have been a longer and fuller book.
Payroll is a good and quick read if you do not have a lot of time to get into a novel. It is not a romance in the general sense of the romance genre now days but it is still has the love story that I just love to read.
Jimmy Cochran has a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and always seems to be running from something. One bad event in his life is not enough they just have to keep on coming, mostly in the form of banks and bankers.
All the problems seem to start when he is young and traveling on the quiet streets of Houston and a man offers him fifty dollars to keep an eye out while he robs the bank. When Jimmy is thought to be the Murder of the bank teller he runs and ends up in Laredo where things look up. That is until he accidentally kills the brother of Ralph McCormick and is run out of town again.
When Jimmy finally reaches where he is going he meets Adelaide O'Hara who happens to be the niece of Jeff O'Hara who had taken Jimmy in when he first reached Laredo. The love story between Adelaide and Jimmy is a good one with gun fights and kidnappings something every good western love story needs.

Have you ever been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Well this is exactly what happened to Jimmy Cochran. When a man robbed a bank and shot the banker, He took off leaven Jimmy holding the smoking gun so to speak. Fearing for his life he ran till he finally settled down and got a job on a ranch. With the death of the owner the ranch now became Jimmy's except the crooked banker is about to take it all away from him. Though an accidental killing Jimmy is on the run again and ending up being in the right place maybe at the wrong time. Helping take a wagon train west he knows he should be getting out of town instead but when Adelaide the woman he loves is put in danger changes everything. Will Jimmy finally be able to settle down and quit being on the run. Will there be a future with Miss Adelaide?
This is a cleanly written story by a new author that I feel will go places. If you are looking for a fast afternoon or lunch hour read that is cleanly written without all the coarse language and the sexual encounters that seem to fill so many books today then you may want to give her books a try. If you liked "Payroll", you will want to watch for book 2 in the Jimmy Cochran Series "Takeover"
